Material Questions

  1. What types of chemicals can rubber be exposed to?

Exposure of chemicals such as petroleum products, cleaning liquids, etc. vary from job type to job type. We would need to know things such as:

    • What chemicals are present?
    • How long will the rubber be exposed to these fluids?
    • What temperatures would the chemicals be?

It’s best to contact us directly to get our engineering and quality team involved.

  2. What is the life expectancy of a gasket once it’s installed?

As long as the proper material is used for the conditions, we believe that our gaskets can last the life of the structure or pipe. It can be dependent on whether or not the structure is buried or not.

If on pipe/structures exposed to the elements for long periods of time, EPDM is the best option.

Technical Information

  1. What is maximum depth to bury a manhole connector?

The maximum depth can vary on a lot of factors such as water table and head pressure.

    • Key Factors: Depth depends on material properties, load considerations, and soil conditions.
    • Standard Depth: Generally up to 20 feet, but site-specific analysis may allow deeper installations.
    • Risks of Excessive Depth: Includes deformation, leakage, and maintenance challenges.
    • Solutions for Deep Burial: Use reinforced materials, load-distributing structures, or engineered designs.
    • Ensuring Reliability: Follow manufacturer guidelines, ensure proper installation, and best practices.
    • Impact of Water Tables: High water tables increase pressure; use watertight connectors and durable seals.

If you need further guidance, can contact a territory manager to discuss the details.

  2. Where can I get test results?

Test results for gaskets are available upon request. You can contact our engineering team or your sales territory manager to obtain the specific data you need.

We provide test results on various factors, including material performance, sealing capabilities, and compliance with industry standards such as ASTM C443, ASTM C923, ASTM C1619, ASTM C361, ASTM C1628, ASTM F477, ASTM D3139, ASTM C111, CSA A257, CSA B137, and NSF/ANSI 61), and other application-specific requirements.

Since test results may vary depending on material type, application, and testing conditions, please let us know of your specific requirements to ensure we provide the most relevant information. For assistance, contact us at:

    2. Call us at 1-800-348-7325
  3. I have a technical question. Who do I contact?

If you have a technical question such as bury depth, material specs, etc., typically we can answer your question via phone or email:

    1. Contact us via email [email protected]
    2. Call us at 1-800-348-7325

Or if you’d like to speak to a sales representative you can find your territory manager here.

  4. How much deflection can your manhole connectors handle?

Our connectors are rigorously tested and certified to meet ASTM C 923 standards, ensuring performance under 7° of deflection. This standard guarantees a robust and reliable connection, even under demanding conditions, aligning with industry requirements for watertightness and durability.

For applications requiring greater than 7° of deflection, we recommend contacting us directly. Our engineering team can explore potential solutions tailored to your specific needs, which may include custom designs or alternative configurations to accommodate increased flexibility without compromising structural integrity or sealing performance.

Please feel free to provide details about your project requirements, such as pipe size, type, and expected environmental or mechanical stressors, so we can help you figure out or develop a solution that exceeds standard deflection capabilities for your project.

  5. What are your recommendations for storing gaskets?

Storing and caring for your rubber gaskets or connectors is vital to the longevity and performance of our products.

    Recommendation Summary

    • Store without stretch or tension including hanging
    • Store free from compression or deformation
    • Refer to storage requirements within ASTM’s related to products and standards
    • Protect from direct sun and artificial light, UV and other radiation
    • Protect from ozone (generated from some electrical devices)
  6. What is the best gasket for my application?

Typical applications include waterworks, stormwater, sewer, and industrial systems. To ensure the best gasket recommendations, we require key variables such as operating temperature, pressure, fluid type, and environmental conditions. Press-Seal offers a variety of materials, including EPDM, Nitrile, Neoprene, and Isoprene, each selected for their specific properties to suit different operating environments.

Our gaskets are designed to meet or exceed key industry standards, including ASTM C443, ASTM C923, ASTM C1619, ASTM C361, ASTM C1628, ASTM F477, ASTM D3139, ASTM C111, CSA A257, CSA B137, and NSF/ANSI 61, ensuring both safety and reliability. For unique applications, we offer custom-designed solutions tailored to your specifications. Our engineers will work with you to determine the optimal gasket solution based on your needs.
